Tarragon Rainnewt

Cinnamon Bun

Tarragon Rainnewt is a senior member of the Port Royal branch of the Exploration Guild and the official whose recommendation gives Broccoli Bunch her first recognized connection to that organization. His importance lies in the double meaning of that recommendation: it opens a path into professional exploration, yet later becomes evidence of an irregular process that helps destabilize the guild and leaves Broccoli vulnerable to expulsion. Through him, the Exploration Guild is shown not as a simple adventure club but as a layered institution governed by reputation, paperwork, risk management, and personal discretion.

Identity and Institutional Position

Tarragon presents himself as an experienced Grenoil administrator with enough authority to receive applicants, evaluate recommendations, and arrange expedition placements. When Broccoli arrives at the Exploration Guild headquarters in Port Royal, he is identified through the name attached to her Exploration Guild Recommendation Letter. After recognizing the unbroken seal as the work of Leonard Chand’nuit, he invites her into a large, lavish office decorated with maps and displays of unusual objects. The setting establishes him as a person whose work is connected to the guild’s accumulated knowledge, even though his authority is exercised through an office, documents, and procedures rather than through a public display of combat ability.

His formal introduction is precise: Tarragon states that he is one of the senior members of the Port Royal branch. He reads Leonard’s letter before addressing Broccoli as Miss Bunch, and he immediately places her within the guild’s administrative machinery. His manner is welcoming and practical, but his position also makes him a gatekeeper. He can decide whether an outsider receives an opportunity, what temporary status she receives, and which expedition will serve as the test of her suitability.

Recruitment of Broccoli Bunch

Tarragon explains that the Exploration Guild does not simply admit anyone. New members normally receive rapid training from veteran members and then undertake several simple, low-risk missions. He describes the guild as unusually broad in its membership, containing prestigious adventurers seeking recognition, explorers interested in architecture and archaeology, and people attracted by gold and comparatively low mortality. This explanation gives Broccoli a working picture of the institution before she signs anything: the guild values exploration, but it also manages danger and accommodates very different motives.

His immediate reason for considering Broccoli is administrative as much as personal. He has an odd number of applicants, including a new noble member but no talented recruit with whom to pair her. Because new applicants are usually sent out in pairs, he sees Broccoli as a solution to an existing staffing problem. He tells her that she may fit in well and that, after her first expedition, he might place her on a team better suited to her skills. The recruitment therefore combines opportunity with expediency: Broccoli is not merely discovered as an individual talent but selected because she arrives at a moment when the branch needs a partner for an already accepted applicant.

Tarragon’s practical approach continues through the temporary contract. He asks whether Broccoli knows how to write her name, a question that briefly suggests he may underestimate her literacy or social background. She responds by reading the entire document before writing “Broccoli Bunch” in large letters with his pen. The contract makes her a temporary guild member for one month or until specified requirements are fulfilled, grants protections and discounts through other guilds, reduces travel costs, and allows reimbursement for some food and special-equipment expenses. It also contains a grace period for the admission fee and permits her to quit if the guild proves unsuitable. Broccoli signs before making a final decision about permanent admission, so Tarragon’s process gives her both a formal opportunity and a limited right of withdrawal.

He then explains the guild’s visual system of rank and achievement. Most members traditionally wear a bandoleer, while pins and medals indicate accomplishments and status; his own lapel bears a compass rose surrounded by pins. He gives Broccoli an Exploration Guild badge, transforming her from a traveller with a letter into someone provisionally marked as part of the organization. The badge and contract make her entry tangible, while the conditions attached to them preserve the temporary and conditional nature of her membership.

Expedition Assignment and Administrative Failure

Tarragon assigns Broccoli to Amaryllis Albatross and explicitly tells the Grenoil adventurer accompanying them that Broccoli will be Amaryllis’s partner. He expects the adventurer to take care of Broccoli as well, while noting that she already has experience. This assignment links Broccoli to a noble recruit and fulfills the pairing arrangement Tarragon had described in his office. The expedition is recorded as Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC from the Port Royal branch, with a mission to explore, scout, and map the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to the meeting point.

The paperwork makes Tarragon’s decision look orderly. The official expedition summary identifies a number, year, branch, and mission statement, and the assignment follows his explanation of how new applicants are supposed to be trained and tested. Yet the later guild crisis reveals that the appearance of order was incomplete. After the expedition, Broccoli learns that Rainnewt has gone missing and that he accepted her as a member without following the proper channels. Amaryllis Albatross also states that Tarragon was the person who arranged all the missions. The same administrative initiative that had enabled Broccoli to join therefore becomes part of the explanation for why her position is challenged.

This reversal complicates Tarragon’s earlier role. He had seemed to be the official who noticed Broccoli’s usefulness, explained the rules, and gave her a protected provisional status. In retrospect, his discretion exceeded the procedures expected by the guild. The evidence does not establish the details of his disappearance or his motives, but it does establish the institutional consequence: his absence leaves others to judge the legitimacy of the arrangements he made, and Broccoli bears the immediate risk of that judgment.

Consequences for the Guild and Broccoli

When the guild’s leadership confronts Broccoli, she is told to accept standard mission pay and then leave. The stated reason is not failure to pay the admission fee; it is that she is considered a liability and should never have been allowed to join. This response directly collides with Tarragon’s earlier assurances. He had told Broccoli that she could pay after returning and had offered a contract with a grace period, while the later administrator treats the irregularity surrounding her admission as grounds for removal.

Amaryllis explains the larger crisis: Rainnewt accepted Broccoli without proper authorization, arranged the missions, and is suspected by Amaryllis of involvement in an attempted kidnapping. The guild’s solution is to remove the recruit who was easiest to reach, even though Broccoli has done more to correct the guild’s mistakes than the officials now criticizing her. Tarragon is therefore absent from the confrontation but remains its central missing figure. His disappearance converts a personal recruitment decision into a question about institutional accountability: whether the guild should punish Broccoli for the actions of the official who admitted her, or recognize the value of the work performed under his arrangements.

The proposed compromise sends Broccoli and Amaryllis west with Abraham Bristlecone, who offers to transport them to the smaller Exploration Guild branch in Greenshade. The relocation preserves their access to guild work while removing them from the immediate dispute in Port Royal. Tarragon’s intervention thus has a lasting effect even after he vanishes: his decision produces Broccoli’s initial membership, her partnership with Amaryllis, the dispute over her legitimacy, and the transfer that carries both women into another phase of the story.

Narrative Function

Tarragon functions as both recruiter and absent catalyst. He embodies the attractive face of institutional adventure: maps, badges, travel discounts, mission contracts, veteran training, and the promise that a capable newcomer can find a place in a larger network. His office gives Broccoli a formal language for belonging, and his recommendation allows her to move from isolated travel toward organized exploration.

At the same time, his handling of Broccoli exposes the fragility of that belonging. The guild’s procedures appear protective when Tarragon explains them, but they become exclusionary when his own conduct is questioned. His story is consequently less a simple rise-and-fall than an institutional inversion: the official who opens the door is later revealed to have opened it improperly, while the recruit admitted through that door must defend the legitimacy of her achievements. Tarragon’s lasting significance comes from that tension between access and authorization, personal judgment and formal channels, and the promise of a guild that has not yet learned how to take responsibility for the choices made by its own senior members.
